I have decided that the first song I will review is Lithium by Nirvana. You are able to download it either on a Single CD with Curmudgeon and Been a Son or you can download the Stepping Stone for Seattle Sound, the Megahit 1991 Diamond Selling Album Nevermind which features the hits Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, In Bloom, Breed and Lithium. The links will be at the bottom of the post. Lithium is a song about a man who turns to religion to keep him from commiting suicide after his girlfriend dies. The lyrics are very deep and meaningful and Kurt Cobain puts some of his experiences like breaking up into the song. The most memorable feature of the song is the quiet to loud dynamics that Kurt Cobain popularized. Their is distortion at points throughout the song. The man develops Bi-Polar disorder which is also known as Maniac Depression where you hit Maniacle highs and catastrophic lows. I will mention the lyrics that in my opinion make it seem as though the man was suffering from Bi-Polar disorder.
friends...
They're in my head (Hallucinations, Both Maniacle and Depressive)
"I'm so ugly .. So are you" and "I'm so lonely..." and "I'm to blame..." and "Sunday morning ..."-
(Depression, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, dissociation and distrust of others)
I found God" and "my will is good" ( Bi-Polar disorder can lead people to re-examine their beliefs and their faiths)
I'm so excited..." and "I'm so horny... (Increased sexual drive is a very common form of mania.)
"I like it.... etc" (reflects the frenzy, desperation and intensity of a bi polar condition. Some sufferers are aware they are bi polar but choose not to medicate as they do not wish to lose the manic highs.) "I like it, I miss you, I love you, I kill you" (reflects trying unsuccessfully to ride out a manic episode, an being determined not to crack.-Maniacle)
Lithium itself is a treatment for Bi-Polar disorder. It holds its own horrors though as it damages your kidneys as well as making users feel nausea.
I hope you have enjoyed my interpretation of Lithium by Nirvana, Grunge music means something different to everyone and thats what I love about it so if you have a different interpretation on this song please leave a comment because I want to know what you think!
